Children’s & YA Literature
I’m the author of fiction and creative non-fiction books for children and young adults. My books have won the QWF Prize for Children’s and YA Literature, twice; they’ve been nominated for the Red Cedar Book Award, Silver Birch, Forest of Reading awards and the Rocky Mountain Book Award, and were selected for CCBC Best Books for Kids & Teens (starred selection), USBBY Outstanding International Books (Grades 3-5), Quill & Quire’s “Best of 2007” (Children’s) and more.
I’ve lived and worked in Washington DC, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Barcelona and Toronto (where I was born and raised as a first-generation Canadian). These experiences, along with my own mixed heritage, give me a thirst for new ways of thinking and dreaming, with a deep interest in history, culture, social roles and norms. Cultures in cooperation is the theme that runs through my writing.
Since 2013, writing and consulting for Constellations—a web resource for teachers and young readers produced by the Quebec Ministry of Education—has given me a broad perspective on current, quality children’s and YA literature, and the educational market.
Evaluation and/or detailed editing of draft manuscripts, with an emphasis on market attraction and publishing goals. Custom-designed visits, workshops and presentations with writing groups, classes, book clubs, teachers’ associations, etc. (Copyediting and proofreading services are not offered.)
Fiction, creative non-fiction, historic fiction, humour, unique voices, graphic/comics, working with fellow writers of all levels of experience.
