Brief Bio

I am a writer, translator and editor. My publications include two story collections and the novels Lear’s Shadow (2018), My October (2014), finalist for the Governor General’s Fiction Award and long-listed for the Scotia Bank-Giller Prize, and The Heart Specialist (2009), long-listed for the 2009 Scotia Bank-Giller Prize and sold in six countries.  For many years I taught literature and creative writing at Marianopolis College. I also led the Advanced Fiction Workshop in McGill University’s Department of English for four years.

Meeting fellow writers and helping them bring their work into the world is one of the pleasures of this writing life. Privately and through the QWF, I’ve been a midwife to some beautiful births.

Services Offered

I offer a range of mentoring and editorial services from an initial read-through and response to a detailed line edit. If you are starting a project, I can help you develop ideas.  As you write, I can provide deadlines and whatever amount and form of feedback is useful. If you have a manuscript in hand, I can read it, give feedback, edit for structure or, if you are near completion, offer line edits.  I tend to ask a lot of questions, encouraging writers to find their own vision and voice.  Writing of any length is welcome—short pieces for contest or journal submission, and longer works over several drafts. Consults are available by Skype or in person to discuss written feedback. Services can be tailored to your needs
